What is it?
This resource provides an overview of what good support looks like in services for people with learning disabilities and/or autism.
It was jointly written by United Response, a national care provider who also works extensively in LB Richmond, and the University of Kent.
Why might it be of interest?
How many of us know what a good supported living or residential care placement should look like? We’ll have some ideas about what we would like for our young person and what we definitely don’t want to see but beyond those ideas most of us probably don’t really know what to look for that will tell us how good a setting actually is.
This guide has sections on meaningful activities and relationships, communication, supporting people with autism, supporting people with behavior which is described as challenging, a bit about processes and leadership and a checklist of things you can look for if you have the opportunity to observe a supported living setting.
Even if you don’t have the opportunity to observe a supported living setting you will have questions to ask of the management and the care team and this checklist will give you food for thought.
I think, if you use this guide, you will feel much more confident in your decisions about supported living for your young person.
